Yup. With no fanfare, drama, previews or even a hint that we had something up our sleeves, we give you the new official Ideamen website. We just loaded it up with the store items, tossed in a few show dates, and with this entry, it will have a "News" category. That stuff is available in the main menu. Each member of Ideamen will have a profile, and will be able to make posts to tell you stuff like they went shopping today and saw some jogger wearing these hideous yellow sweatpants with a giant hole in the backside - we can't wait!
A word from Dave:
We're using a new blogging platform called Habari. It's been a blast to work with so far, and I'm happy to not only finally catch up with the times on the intertubes - but to be ahead of it a bit using this shiny new toy that's not even at a 1.0 release yet. Habari is kind of like a playground, except that instead of having things to play on it has parts and pieces and you can make whatever toys you want. The parts all look rather foreign to me, and I've had my share of poking square pegs into orange colored holes resulting in cute pink error messages.
It's been an interesting journey, as I'd only had a cursory brush with PHP, and have never fiddled with any blog platforms. I started by installing a handful of Content Management Systems (a fancier word for blog platforms) on my host and promptly breaking them in the quest to make an Ideamen web site. I liked Textpattern, the theme system seemed pretty intuitive at first, but had a couple bits that kind of bugged me, and read on a wiki that the original creator up and disappeared... So much for a maintained product. I really hated Joomla. I don't want to talk about it. I actually didn't bother with WordPress. I stumbled upon some reviews of a newish platform called Habari, and i hesitated. It was so new, so untested and kind of unorganized (i still have trouble making heads or tails of their documentation, wiki and forums). However it looked so darn promising. As a fledgling programmer, the purported flexibility, power and elegance of Habari won me over. That and it appears that the community is friendly and helpful, which is a plus. I took a moment to figure out what the heck an IRC was and popped in to ask a question and got a quick and immediately useful response.
Soooo.... here we are. New website. Unlimited possibilities. Comments allowed, nay, encouraged. We'll be able to hear from you and respond to you all in one place. Got some really cool features in the works. This will be fun.
We'll see you on the road!!

Well, what I think Dave is saying here is "We got a new toy for you to play with, so let's use it people!"

@ Mark V.
I didn't say that!! But I meant that. Come and play. We'll be updating the shows posts as we progress through the tour to let y'all know how we're doing out there. Feel free to comment in the shows posts to let us know if you're coming and/or to tell us what you thought of the show!

When will the pre-orders be shipped? I know the mail system is slow here, last week the hosre died. Terrible tragedy. Great Burgers!!!!
I plan on coming out to your next show that's not stupid driving distance away. Hoping that this time I won't have to sit through a bunch of bad "metal" bands first.
Later, and have an unsafe fantastic trip.

@Roofgnome and everybody that ordered CDs: Pre-orders have all been shipped! I believe they went out on Wed. the 28th. A wee on the late side, but we had to kiss them all and Timmy got some slobber on some of the posters. All the CDs are signed (open it up, we signed the insides) as well as the posters. The kisses... you'll have to sniff around for those.
@EÆRTH: WE LV U ND WR HPPY ZOMG CANT WAIT 2 CU AT THE NXT GIG!! No really, we love U.
We're in Minnesota right now, and it's cold. Tim has the piggy flu and we're all gonna die. Happy Halloween!

Glad to know they were all shipped. I would hate to think I was being left out since I am a Roofgnome. Or as we like to be called....... a "Gnomer".
Don't believe the hype: You won't die of swine flu. They only give you a shot full of nanobots so the government can track all your movements.
Enjoy!!!!!

I'm liking the website layout. I've actually been thinking about setting up my own webserver for a website that is primarily blog based and I'll definitely be looking into habari now.
The CD kicks arse too, I'll hit up a show when I make it back to the states in a couple years.

Awesome to see you using Habari, welcome.
Are ideamen on thesixtyone.com?

Hello Michael! We are now, thanks for the heads up.
http://www.thesixtyone.com/#/Ideamen/
Tickles me pink that you found us and left a comment, thank you for the welcome. I'll be writing a post soon about what we're planning to do with the website (some to-do's and a wish list) and I'm looking forward to (bugging) working with the Habari community to pick brains on some of the tougher bits. I've already tossed up a couple other Habari sites ('cos it's just so darn easy and I had the immediate need) and have had some fun tweaking them to do what I wanted. (One, here, is what I do in my Second Life.)
I'm hoping to go pretty cutting edge with the site (or at least take as much advantage of the platform as possible to suit our needs) and will be making many many mods to the theme (you've surely noticed that I used your Connections theme as a base) and creating custom plugins to add in our own needed functionality. What I'd like to do in the process is to create a sort of "How an idiot figured out how to program Habari" guide/tutorial as I'm certain that some of the things we want are things that others could also use, and Habari desperately needs some guides for the PHP/programmatically impaired. That and I'm just plain excited to share what I'm learning how to do.
Thanks for the wonderful platform, can't wait to (bug) chat with you folks!
p.s. For the Ideamen fans who have no idea what this is about, Michael is a member of the Habari Cabal, the folks who lovingly crafted Habari for us to play with, and we used one of the themes he ported to build our site on. To a geek, this is like meeting the president. :P

@Malnilion - Thanks! It's still got some quirks and bugs, but the time from concept to going live was ridiculously quick (especially the way I work), and getting it "good enough" to provide us with the minimum we needed just took a little searching and editing (and a wee bit of programming).
Glad you like the CD, burn it and give it to everyone you know!

Welcome to Habari. Enjoy the ride. I loved Dave's description:
'The parts all look rather foreign to me, and I've had my share of poking square pegs into orange colored holes resulting in cute pink error messages.'

Wheee! Just as I got done responding to Michael's comment, we got one from Andy C! Oh you guys just made my day.
@Andy C - Definitely enjoying the ride, and learning a little bit more about it every day. Now to go find those orange colored pegs...
p.s. For the Ideamen fans again - Andy C is an active developer/evangelist for the Habari Project.

Ha, president! One of a multitude of self-selected speakers of the house, maybe!
Looking forward to your bugging and a guide would be awesome. I'm michaeltwofish everywhere, on t61 where I've pimped Ideamen to my group, and Habari IRC. Make sure you say hi if you see me.

Glad to see you are using Habari. Hope to hear your ideas on "the list". I'll have to check you out on "thesixtyone".
I don't know why I'm "quoting" everything...
November 18th, 2009 at 4:08pm
Flibbertigibbets! Force of "habit". I'm still sick (caught a second bug) and lazy, and the site will have to remain "broken" for a few more days. I suppose I should start writing "the list".
Hey another p.s. - Matt is a "brilliant" "programmer" who puts helpful info and tools up (not just Habari stuff) on the interwebs, like Drunken Monkey Labs. He may also be a discordian.
